Melmark Center for Integrated Services
LEED-certified addition and renovation
Berwyn, PA | 45,000 SF
Founded in 1966, Melmark provides residential care and day program services for children and adults with a variety of disabilities. The original site mansion, designed in the 1920’s, was modeled after Malmaison outside Paris as a private residential 35 room estate. Today, the mansion has been transformed into Melmark’s Center for Integrated Services for administrative office use.
HSA's design both modernizes the existing space and respects the Parisian architecture, all while providing a substantial addition to meet Melmark's current and future needs. The new ground floor design offers expanded therapeutic and educational space, offsetting the floor structure to avoid costly structural underpinning and utilizing high ceilings for access to natural light. The first, second and third floors provide critically needed office, training and event space.
Refurbishment of window hardware, respect for exterior materials and architectural forms, and restoration of interior details are incorporated into the design seeking LEED certification.
